Lie #3: men and women can't be friends (because the sex part always gets in the way)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
Q: Take a look at some of the things that were written in the He Said/She Said exercise that we did (the previous post). Did you think there were any interesting differences between what the other group said about what was GREAT/DIFFICULT about being friends with the opposite sex? Was there anything that you heard that was surprising?
Q: Many of the things on our list are generalizations. Do you know any people who represent challenges to these generalizations?

CLIP from "When Harry Met Sally": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8kpYm-6nuE

Q: What do you think about Harry's (Billy Crystal) reasoning for why men and women can't be friends. Do you think he's right?
Q: In what way(s) does this clip reflect an accurate portrayal of the way men and women think and behave?
Q: In what way(s) does this clip reflect an inaccurate portrayal of the way men and women think and behave?
Q: Do you have any good friendships with the opposite sex? Do you ever think that attraction/desire for a relationship gets in the way?
Q: What characteristics make a friendship with the opposite sex work?
Q: What do you think it means to "honour one another above yourselves"? How might this impact our friendships with the opposite sex?
Q: Keeping in mind the scripture passages that we have looked at tonight, what characteristics should be present in Christian friendships?
Q: What do you think the goal of Christian friendships should be?

RELEVANT SCRIPTURE PASSAGES:
John 15:12-13
Jesus (speaking to his disciples): “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Romans 12:10
Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves.”

Colossians 3:12-14
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kinds, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
